strange "save as" select box behavior

So you know when you go to "save as" in any program and you get the "save
as" window that shows you the contents of the folder where the most recent
file was saved? Normally, on every other installation of windows I have
ever seen, if you drop down the "Save in:" select box at the top of that
window, it will show you the file tree leading to your current location.
However, when I click the dropdown, the dropdown automatically selects "my
recent documents". The white browsing area of the window changes to "my
recent documents" as well. I can then click the little "back" arrow to go
back to the original folder location, and then the dropdown works as it
should.

This happens every time I use that dropdown. Does anyone know what might be
causing this problem?

Thanks,
Dominic

Hi Kelly,

Thank you for your reply.

It is just a run-of-the mill save-as dialog box in Photoshop where it annoys
me most. However it happens with dialog boxes of just about any kind
(open... import... etc). It does seem to favor certain applications. I
know Photoshop and iTunes are both afflicted. I can't seem to make it
happen in HomeSite or MS Word at the moment.

I do have TweakUI installed and verified that all teh drives are selected.
I also tried making a custom "places" bar to see if that might help but it
didn't.

I have this same behavior on my computer. I finally came to the conclusion
that it was one of those helpful little "features" that Microsoft added.
It's irritating, but I haven't found any way to avoid it either. BTW, I've
run both XP Home and XP Pro on different computers, and have seen it in both
places.

Thanks. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one with this problem.

I don't think it's an intended feature by microsoft, because I didn't have
this problem before I did a clean install of my OS a few months ago. The
dialog boxes in the same programs worked correctly before. Ever since then
this behavior has been happening and I can't for the life of me figure out
the cause.
