"save as" file dropdown quirk

D

Dominic Tocci

So you know when you go to "save as" in any program and you get the "save
as" window that shows you the contents of the folder where the most recent
file was saved? Normally, on every other installation of windows I have
ever seen, if you drop down the "Save in:" select box at the top of that
window, it will show you the file tree leading to your current location.
However, when I click the dropdown, the dropdown automatically selects "my
recent documents". The white browsing area of the window changes to "my
recent documents" as well. I can then click the little "back" arrow to go
back to the original folder location, and then the dropdown works as it
should.

This happens every time I use that dropdown. Does anyone know what might be
causing this problem?

Thanks,
Dominic

Dominic,

This information applies to Common Dialog (open/save as boxes).

Try clearing the "LastVisitedMRU" in the following key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32]

FYI: The "Clear List" under recent documents section in Start Menu Properties, clears the above item as well.

Thank you, Ramesh. Unfortunately this didn't solve the problem. I used the
"clear list" method. Launched Photoshop and tried a "save as" with the same
old results. I verified the registry key was cleared as well.

Any other ideas?

Dominic,

It's possible by an application to override the Common Dialog last saved location. Means the application seems to specify the location wrongly. If this happens only for the particular application, you may try contacting their support team to know if there is a resolution.

It definitely doesn't happen equally amongst my applications. The ones that
annoy me most are Photoshop and Itunes. And it's not always the "Save As"
dialog box that is to blame. Sometimes it is the "Import", "Open", or
virtually any other dialog box that allows you to browse the directory
structure.

I may be stuck here... Thank you for your help, Ramesh. Hopefully I will
still find the solution to this problem.
