Strange problem with setup.exe installers

Hi everyone

I have a really bizarre problem here. Namely, when I download executable
installers (like, say, the .exe file to install Moz Firefox), I run them
and the associated programs install OK. However, shortly after that
(possibly after the next reboot, although I'm not sure), the installer
loses its icon and no longer runs (if I double-click it, I get the
hourglass pointer for a second but that's it. I've also tried running
some installers from the command prompt but received no error messages
whatsoever).

I like to collect these downloads for my other machines or in the event
of a reinstall but I have to download them again because the ones I have
no longer work!

Installed programs seem to work fine - it's only installer setup.exe
type programs that are effected.

Any ideas?!

System is WinXP Pro SP1, virus scan turned up clean, as did
Spybot/Adware scans.

Hey John ... I am not sure if this will help with your problem ... Microsoft
has a program call Tweak UI that has an option to repair icons , Its also a
nice little program to have , If you like here is the URL for it , Just look
on the right for Tweak UI ... The last option in this program has repair
icon
