setup.exe does not work! with anything!

I can not get a single program that requires the use of
setup.exe to work. I have downloaded games, freeware,
shareware, and none of them that use setup.exe will
work. I doubleclick on setup.exe and the hourglass
appears... then it disappears.. I go to processes and see
it is running, but it's not doing anything at all, just
sitting there! What can possibly be wrong? Installing
other programs without a setup.exe works fine. I have
tried using setup.exe on my harddrive, and from cd.. no
dice. Someone HELP!
Thanks,
Kim Brown

It was malware.. winactive.exe. I have no clue what that has to do with setup programs, but the minute I deleted it with adaware, a setup program opened up and started running. It was one I had tried to start earlier with no success... I guess it was trying to open up the whole time and the winactive.exe was somehow keeping it from working. I am posting this (albeit a little after the fact) so that anyone with this problem in the future might be able to fix their problem. Get a spyware program, in fact, get a few because some get things that others do not. I hope this helps someone avoid the stress I went through.

I could just kiss you.
I had the same problem with SETUP.EXE and I did a Google search to fin
your message.
I ran AdAware and it also found malware, though another one than yours
But after deleting it, SETUP.EXE worked again.
I would never have thought of running AdAware to get rid of thi
problem.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for following up on your own message
