Strange problem with File and Folder Sharing on HP Laptop WinXPMCE

I am sorry for this long message. I thought it would be helpful if you have
all the info up front. I have a problem with file and folder sharing. I have
set the folder to share (on the sharing tab) and have made sure the
permissions are correct (on the security tab) but I cannot access those files
on other network connected computers (which are SP PRO SP2). It seems that I
can access some folders root but not the subfolders contained within. Even
certain files within the main folder are not accessible. I have all firewalls
turned off and have confirmed that it is a laptop problem since I cannot
access laptop files from any of the network connected computers. (The laptop
can access files on the other computers though). Other networked computers
can see the laptop and shared folders show up in the list but I cannot access
them or their subfolders. I have tried running the network setup wizard
several times and the problem is there whether I am using the wireless or the
lan cable on the laptop. I have gone through the file and folder sharing
troubleshooter but it did not resolve my problem. I also tried System Restore
but that also did not work. The network is through a Linksys router and all
other computers connect fine. This all worked fine a few weeks ago. Can
anyone make any suggestions as to what is wrong? Any help would be much
appreciated. I have read all the posts on this but none seem to address this
particular problem.

Hello Peter,

On the laptop you could try resetting the TCP/IP stack:

Go to Start => Run and type in "cmd" {without the quotes}

In the command window type in the following two commands and press
Enter after each:

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ip reset reset.log

Hi Claymore,

Thanks for the quick reply and the suggestion about resetting the TCP/IP
stack. Unfortunately, I tried your exact instructions (complete with a
restart each time) several times but to no avail.

I have also in the meantime tried uninstalling my FSecure internet security
suite and compared my services.msc with those on my desktops (which have no
problems). None of these measures has solved this strange problem.

It is not as if I cannot connect. The network connection on MSHome is always
there and the shared directories show up in the list, it is just that I
cannot access certain ones of them and certain files in the root directory.
Some files and directories are fine but others just give me a windows long
beep sound and no error message when I try to access them.

I have tried to compare the attributes and permissions on the files that can
be shared VS the ones that won't share and there is no difference that I can
see. It really is a mystery and any further suggestions would be much
appreciated. I would really rather not reinstall windows just to clear up
this problem, but I also need to copy large files from the laptop to the
desktop.
Peter
