Strange problem after installing Tweak UI

I downloaded and installed Tweak UI from Microsofts website and started
poking around to see what nifty things it could do.
To my supprise, without making changes (or so I thought) I exited the
program and went about restarting my computer. After booting I found that
my desktop looked a little strange. The icons on the desktop for My
Computer and My Network Places no longer looked like XP icons but W2K icons.
And all the other icons on my desktop look like they are being displayed in
8bit, or possibly even just 8 colours. When I clicked on Start, I found
that the colours there weren't quite right, and I was appauled to see that
when I clicked on programs I had the old W2K style list where unused
programs are darkened and look sunk in, where programs I use are light and
raised.
Needless to say, after paying for Windows XP and putting up with all the
patches to make it run smoothly, I was not pleased to find W2K lurking
underneath there.
I decided that maybe I had changed the settings in Desktop Properties, so I
checked there and it says I'm at 1024x768 at 16bit. I figured I'd poke
around and see what happens, and when I changed it to 32bit, my icons are
back to their Windows XP selves again.
Changing back to 16bit makes them ugly and old looking, so there's something
wrong. Even at 32bit, my Programs list is still sunken/raised and
occasionally a desktop icon will go "ugly" on me.
Has anyone else had this happen?
What did I do wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Patrick.

Unfortunately, Ive never had this problem happen. Ive
never used Tweak UI either. But this could be a problem
of Tweak UI. If it isnt too late, try doing a system
restore that dates back to a time BEFORE the install of
Tweak UI. If you cant, then see if there is even an
option in Tweak UI to make your windows environment look
like Windows 2000. If neither of these are the case, I
recommend uninstalling Tweak UI, seeing if that helps,
and if not reinstall Windows XP. Not a full reinstall
though. If you boot to your Windows XP CD at startup it
will start up the WIndows XP Setup. It will ask you to
Press "R" if you want to repair the system via the System
Recovery Console, you want to skip this step, and it
should search your hard drive for Widnows Installations.
When it does that, it should show your Windows XP
installation, and ask if you want to repair it. This time
you will tell it to repair, and it should delete a bunch
of old files and the recopy them, as if you were
installing windows xp all over again, but after your done
you will see it deleted nothing of yours, and just
reinstalled the Windows XP system and startup files. Just
dotn do a fullr einstall where it asks you to Partition
and reformat your Hard drive to NTFS or anything. If none
of these methods work, then I suggest contacting either
Tweak UI or Microsoft support aboutt he problem. Good luck

Thanks,

The last menu option in Tweak UI is Repair. After clicking on Repair, a
drop down menu offers to repair icons. HTH

I think you have used TweakUI's Repair Icons, and have hit a minor bug -
it mis-sets the color depth for icons, and results in getting simplified
ones. Start - Run - Regedit, open the left pane to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowsMetrics
and in the right pane double click on Shell Icon BPP - set the value to
16
