Strange "plopping" noise

A

Amanda

When I browse certain websites, I get this strange noise
that occurs randomly. The best description I can give it
is that is sounds like a "plopping" or a droplet-type
effect. It sounds similar to the "critical stop" sound in
the Utopia Sounds Scheme.

And no, I have no sound scheme set. I have no sound
options set in IE (that I coudl find). I used to have my
speakers on all the time but now have to turn them off so
I don't hear this annoying "plop" sound. And I can't
figure out what causes it. It does it on sites such as
MSN, my local news sites, hotmail....and it also doesn't
seem to be connected to any kind of picture download or
popup or ANYTHING.

This just started out of th eblue. The ONLY thing I have
installed around the time this started is PestPatrol, an
anti-spyware program.

Anyone else with this strange problem?

Have you installed an anti pop-up program by chance. I have STOPZilla and every time it stops a pop-up you get that sound. It can be turned off.

I have had POW! by AnalogX for a looooong time, and besides, there aren't
popups popping up when the noise happens, and I have had popups come up and
there is no noise.

Like I said, this just started, it only happens in IE, and it makes me think
"something" is going on in the background. But I have no idea what.

Oh, and I just checked, and my POW! program has no options for sound or
anything. It's a freebie so it's pretty limited to just stopping popups.

I mean I can be sitting there, stagnant at a web site, and you'll hear this
"plop"......then another "plop"....then maybe two real close to each other
"plop""plop"

So strange...

.Try reloading the driver for your sound card

Good idea. Can't see why that would cause random web-site plop noises, but,
you never know.

Go to Control Pannel, Open "Sounds and Audio Devices",
click on the "Sound Tab", scroll down and find "Windows
Explorer".

You will see Complete Navigation, Empty Recycle Bin, Move
Menu Item, and Start Navigation.

If you IE browser makes sound then there will be a
speaker sign displayed.

You have to highlight the one you don't want and
choose "None" from the sound schemes listed under
the "Sounds" drop down menu and when done click OK.

Thanks but I only have the speaker icon for Empty Recycle Bin, Incoming Fax,
Outgoing Fax, and Start Navigation. And none of those sounds are the one I'm
hearing.

And it's not as consistent at occurring when a certain action happens. I can
have MSN window open and nothing, then I hear it. Sometimes it's several
times in a row.

This will drive me crazy.

And also I need to remind you that I get this sound even with NO SOUND
SCHEME SPECIFIED. Meaning in Control Panel/Sounds/ I have "No sounds" set as
the scheme for everything. And I still get this sound.

Just because you have NO SOUND SCHEMA SPECIFIED does not
mean that there are not sounds associated with tasks. I
would look at every item that as a speaker symbol beside
it on the sound tab and "play" that sound to see if it is
the sound that is bothering you.

Let me know.

See posts on "annoying "eep/waterdrop" sound when I open webpages in..."
posted April 20. It might have to do with PestPatrol and cookies.

That's it. That sound was driving me crazy. It even played whenever an add pop-up in Real Player, which was unbelievably annoying when listening to radio. Thanks to you all!!!

I had the same problem, erratic and promiscuous plopping ( ooh er missus ). It turned out to be the PC telling me that a usb cable was plugged in without any kit attached to it. Removed the cable and the sound went away. Hope it works for you.
