Strange pattern on monitor

G

granjan

My friend has a Dell Dimension XPS 600 with WinXP sp3. Recently her
monitor started having multiple patterned lines across it (red or
green). She thought it was the monitor so bought a new one but it
did the same thing. I'm assuming she needs a new graphics card but
is there somewhere else I should check first? Graphics are onboard
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE. I installed latest driver but it did
nothing to change it. She is also having other problems with a very
slow, sluggish computer which I will try to address also, but wanted
to find out about video first. Any suggestions?

If it's an Integrated Graphics chip on the motherboard
that means it's using some of the PC's main memory.

First try lowering the display 'Color Quality' to 'Medium;.
(Start/Control Panel/Display/Settings tab)
If that doesn't help then check 'Task Manager' for any
processes (Other than System Idle process) that taking
up both a lot of the available CPU% and memory.

Questions:
How much ram is installed?
Is there an available PCI-E graphics card slot?

One thing you can try: IF the monitor is a CRT, *not* an LCD, then the
CRT monitor probably has a de-gaussing button or menu option. Check
your manual for the specifics, since how de-gaussing is done varies from
monitor to monitor. De-gauss the monitor 2-3 times and see what happens.

Cancel my suggestion. I hadn't noticed the OP's
statement that the problem persisted with a new monitor, so de-gaussing
will not help.

It might be the power supply; that could affect both the graphics and
the speed of the system.

I believe there is 1 gb of ram and yes there is pci-e slot.

I'll have to get back with you on that after I go back to her house
or get her on the phone.

"Singapore Computer Service"
: Hello,
:
: Are you using a VGA connection? Does moving the monitor change the
patterns?
: Do the patterns appear when Windows is starting up with the moving
bar?

I believe the slow speed of her system is because she never does any
maintenance on her system such as deleting temp internet files and
emails but there could be more to it than that. How do I check the
power supply?

Is this the same computer you were recently having sound problems with?
If so it would seem that you are having hardware issues, not a windows
issue.
You will get better info if you can give the specs for the computer:
motherboard, processor, amount of memory, hard drive, power supply, any
cards, etc. The more information you give the better your answers will be.
You might also consider posting to a pc hardware group. Like
alt.comp.hardware.pc-homebuilt, for one. Lots of knowledgeable folks there.
But just to stab at it: strange patterns on the monitor I have seen when one
of my video card's fans died and the card was overheating. Left alone that
kind of problem could take the whole machine with it after a while, and
might explain any peripheral problems.

Although I do have a tester, rather than you buying one, it might be
best to put a ps with a larger wattage in the unit. For now, just keep
in mind that the ps could also be contributing to the problem, and try
another, working graphics card, as a test.

Okay, we installed a new graphics card and all is well. Also I
reinstalled windows and did all updates and she has a smooth
operating computer again. She is happy and so am I.
Thanks for all replies and suggestions.
