I noticed a strange new folder on my windows 2000 (SP3).
iTS NAME IS ~cdsntfstmpd_5. It had hundreds of empty files.
I removed it, and two others showed up, with the same name, except for
the number at the end, which was changed.

I am running the AVG antivirus software, and check for other problems
such as spyware. WHat is going on?

The location of the folder is important. If it is under C:\WINNT\system32 then it is definitely something you do not want. But it looks like something you do not want wherever it is. Also note that AV software is really not set up to recognize spyware. The reason for this is that some people may love spyware. They put up with it because they want KaZaA; or ICQ; or AOL; or eDonkey;... So the AV software cannot make that decision. Applications such as:

AdAware 6
BHODemon
HijackThis
CWShredder

are good for spyware. Try these and see if there is anything found. If you have questions on what they find if anything cancel out come here and I'm sure someone will be able to suggest what to do next.

To me it looks like a temporary install folder. Which cleans out after the install completes.
