I don't know whether this is the right place to post this, but since the problem seems to span the realm of XP, WMP, file associations, and codecs, I thought someone here might have a solution
When I try to play mpeg files directly from a web site, windows media player crashes unexplainably
Here are all the details
1. If I download the file to my hard drive first, the file will always play without a problem. It's only when I click on the mpeg directly from an internet site that WMP crashes
2. This happens far more often with files that have "mpeg" as the extension rather than "mpg". Strangely, "mpg" files sometimes work straight from websites, but I can't remember the last time an "mpeg" file worked. This may be just a coincidence
3. I am using the latest windows media player for windows xp. Version 9.00.00.307
4. When the error happens and I send the report, microsoft tells me to install the mainconcept ag encoder. (see http://oca.microsoft.com/en/Response.asp?SID=615 for the details). I have installed their latest encoder and it makes no difference
5. I have already tried uninstalling windows media player and all the codecs and reinstalling them but that didn't help
I don't believe this can possibly be a problem with my video card driver, because of #1 above. Nor can it be a codec problem for the same reason. It's got to be some sort of association or streaming problem
I've been trying to fix this for about a month now. You experts are my last resort. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
