strange (?) message

I received a message that I had a problem with my
computer purportedly from Microsoft. It referred me to
windowspatch.net. Prudence compelled me to do nothing.

The whole thing seemed rather suspicious. Maybe I am
paranoid but have been bitten more than once by hackers.
Is there such a legitimate Microsoft address as
windows.net and what is its purpose?

It is not a site run by Microsoft. Any updates it mentioned you can
download for free from Windows Update.

This site has been going for yonks. What bothers me is "*Why?*" What they
are doing is, obviously, fraudulent, so I don't understand why MS (and/or
the appropriate law enforcement agency) hasn't given them the swift kick up
the you-know-whats.
