Strange happenings w/browsers and OE, please help!

About 3 days ago my computer started acting strange... by this I
mean...

IE or FireFox (FF) hang, when "connecting" to a web page the bottom
left corner says STOP and it just continues to connect, and connect
and connect and nothing happens.

The same problem w/OE, says connecting, but can't find the email.

I have fun virus, spyware, adware and nada. I disabled the firewall to
see if it was a conflict (though it never has before) and nada.

I also either get, End Program - O which I have discovered is when you
try and shut down OE and it's not done searching for mail and/or a
XPCOM: Event Receiver error.

The computer on a router right next to this one worked fine until last
night, it started doing the same crap.

Both computers run XP Pro, w/IE, OE, FF.

Now an IT person I know offered this reason to me, that it has
something to do w/recent microsoft updates?

Problem is, I have to continuously reboot my computer in order to run
a darn thing.

Once I reboot, all programs run normally for 15 - 30 minutes and them
bam, starts all over again.

All other programs that access the net, such as Trillian, have no
connection problems, nor does the virus software. It is just in the
browswers and OE.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this, it is very annoying and a pain in
the you know what to reboot your computer every 30 minutes.

Where there any updates installed from Windows Updates right before the
problem started? If so remove them through add/remove programs then do a
System Restore to before they were installed. If no updates then try a
System Restore.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Power Cycle your Access point equipment ( Modem/Router ). On
each PC, open a CMD prompt box and type Ipconfig /FlushDNS
Also check your TCP/IP settings and make sure the proper DNS
Server and Gateway are defined. If the NIC is Automatically setup
verify the settings with IPConfig/All from the Cmd Prompt. Do a
Ping to both the ISP's Gateway and DNS server addresses. For
both IE and Mail to be affected sounds like a misconfiguration issue
with your Network setup.

Yes, I think there was, I don't remember what, where can I find them
to uninstall them?

In his last paragraph, Rock said this could be done via "add/remove
programs."

Specifically,

Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs

Scroll down to "Windows XP - Software Updates." You'll see a whole mess
of 'em. :)

Remove them through Control Panel | Add/Remove programs. If you don't know
what was installed, go to Windows Update, do a custom scan, then click on
Update History in the left pane for history of what was installed when.

Thanks! I'm at a loss for what's going on, my hijack file was clean
according to castlecops, my spyware scan clean, my adware came up w/
some level 3 trackers, and I deleted them, and yet, I still cannot use
IE or OE properly at times (most times), right now it's working
however, if I close it and re-open it, it won't work, I'd have to
reboot. If I let it sit too long w/o doing anything in IE or OE same
thing. Very, very frustrating, any other steps I can take?

Would realplayer cause this? I allowed a site do DL it a few days ago
and today on shut down I got a strange stop program message from it
and it wasn't even running.

Hmm, I don't see any! I only see Windows SP 2 and Windows Installer
3.1. I know there used to be a whole mess of them...

I can't say , but a standard troubleshooting technique is to undo any recent
changes, which would include uninstalling any new software, removing any new
hardware, then doing a system restore to a time when things worked. It's
best to remove software through Add/Remove programs before doing a system
restore.

I use a drive imaging program, currently Acronis True Image Home version 10,
to regularly image the system to an external hard drive. A full image is
done weekly, with an incremental image nightly. That way I can restore a
previous image if a software or hardware install causes problems.

everything is back to normal! So hopefully it stays that way, thanks
