strange formatting of text

Working in Word 2002, I have imported some text from
another source into my main document, but this new text
insists on its own odd formating (half normal length
lines, but not paragraph mark at the end of each, for
example) that I cannot seem to get rid of. I have tried to
block it and change it to my "normal" style both directly
and using the little brush. Doesn't work. I have tried
the "clear formatting" style, that does not work. I have
tried to delete the last paragraph mark at the end , and
that does not help either. I have tried to move it into
another blank screen and reformat it, and then bring it
back. It stays the same . Any ideas?

Hi. thanks, but that does not help. The passage from the
other source, has NO line or paragraph breaks at the end
of the shorter lines, and this is true when the show/hide
button is on. I had already tried that. there are only
spaces at the end of the short lines and I cannot force
those lines to normal length. Nothing seems to get rid of
whatever underlying formatting is forcing this odd
behavior. "Clear formating" does not in fact do
that. ....?? JF

And there are no paragraph indents?

No, the lines insist on being half lines, and there are on
P-type hidden codes or line breaks at the end of each of
these half lines, nothing but spaces are indicated when I
click on show/hide. If I try to manually move words to the
previous short line, letters are deleted from the front of
the words, and they refuse to move up a line??

The first paragraph marker is way down at the bottom of
the passage and deleting it also changes nothing.... JF

Is the text in a text box, frame, or table cell? Do you have Text Boundaries
displayed?

On the View tab of Tools | Options, check the box for "Text boundaries."

One other idea: can you cut that part out of your
document and then paste it back in using Paste
Special/Unformatted Text?

Thanks to both of you, one strategy solved one example of
the formatting, the other my other problem. Nicely done.
There seem to be hidden codes that you cannot make visible
by any means? JF
