Strange Folders in Windows Directory

In my windows folder I see dozens of folders with cryptic names like
$NtUninstallKB873339$. What are these and can I remove them? If they are
something I need to later uninstall a program I would not remove them.
However they are taking up a lot of space.

What are the $NTUninstall folders? Can they be deleted?

a Service Pack or hotfix?

They are created when you install Windows updates.

They are required if you want to uninstall any of those updates.

So don't remove them!
