Strange error message

I am using word 2007, All of the sudden when I double click a file regardless
if it is on the desktop or on my data drive, Word gives me a message stating
the following;

"Windows can not find 'C://users/myname/desktop/IM Memo.doc' make sure you
typed the name correctly and then try again"

I have tried everything I know to fix this, can anyone shed some light on
how to fix this??

That is for a different type of error message, it seems that word does not
let me open a document by double clicking on it, if I open word first I can
then go to file, open and open it that way.
