Problem when opening Word 2007

Gary

When opening Word 2007 (directly or by clicking on an existing document), a
box pops up that says the following:

File conversion ~$N9Cwyw

Select the encoding that makes your document readable.
Text encoding

Windows is selected because it's the default option. There are a bunch of
strange characters in this dialogue box.

Upon closing it, another one, albeit much smaller pops up that says:

Microsoft Office Word
The add-in template is not valid.

C:\....\STARTUP\~$N9Cwyw.dat

I click "OK" and Word seems to be normal. I'd appreciate it if anyone can
shed some light on what causes this problem and how to fix it. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2007 and it is still happening. thank you.

It sounds like a temp file has gotten stranded in your startup folder.
Navigate to that folder and delete the file that's named ~$N9Cwyw.dat.

If you don't know the startup location, you can discover it in Word. Click
Word Options (at the bottom of the window you see when you click the Office
button--upper left corner of Word). There, click the Advanced tab, File
locations (near the bottom of the Advanced settings window), and see where
Startup is located.

Then, close Word, delete the ~$N9Cwyw.dat file, and any other stray files
you see whose names begin with ~, then try opening Word again.

Thank you both very much. It turns out that the problem was, indeed, with
some files that did not belong in start up. Have a great day!
