STORED PASSWORDS

I am trying to delete an old password from Microsoft's XP
Home addition. The password for Front Page 2000 is
stored somewhere on the computer. It asked me if it
wanted to remember it for me... and I said yes... well I
had web trouble and they reset the password and whenm I
try to upload... it doesn't asked for password... just
goes ahead and tries and then gives me a 502 proxy
error. The password on the website has been changed but
my computer has the old one stored and will not connect
(e-mail address removed)

Stephen,

Passwords of this type are stored in the Protected Storage System Provider section of the Registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider\S-1-5-21-1606980848-1604221776-725345543-1003

Where the S-1-5-21-...... number is specific to your username's SID. You won't see anything listed there by default, as even Adminstrators don't have read privileges for this key and its contents.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider\S-1-5-21-1606980848-1604221776-725345543-1003

Where the S-1-5-21-...... number is specific to your username's SID.

Right click the S-1-5-21.......... sub key and select Permissions. Click the Add button, and add your username to the list, with Full Control. Then click the Advanced button. Highlight your username in the list of users, then check the box Replace permission entries on all child objects............. and apply the changes and OK your way out. When you're back to REGEDIT press the F5 key to refresh the display. Now you can expand the key further and drill down to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider\S-1-5-21-1606980848-1604221776-725345543-1003\Data\5e7e8100-9138-11d1-945a-00c04fc308ff\00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000

Again, the S-1-5-21........ number may vary on your system. Each subkey in this branch represents a stored password for a particular site. Locate the subkey in question and right click it. Select Export to create a backup REG file, just in case. Then right click the subkey again and select Delete.
