Stop PPT links opening in slideshow mode from frontpage web?

G

Guest

I have a intranet site here at work built in FP 2002 with a theme.
My problem is that all of my hyperlinks pointing to powerpoint files open up
full
screen slideshows. What I really want to happen is for the links to open
powerpoint conventionally in edit mode - not in slideshow mode. I cannot find
any controls for this, can anyone shed any light on this for me?
- posted to frontpage group ... was suggested that it was a powerpoint issue
and to try posting here
Thanks
Dale

You will need to be a little more direct in telling the computer what you
want in the link.

1st you'll need to tell it that you want to run an instance of PowerPoint,
so the link should start like this:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\POWERPNT.EXE
or whatever the path to your PowerPoint program file.

Then you will need to tell it what file you want the linked program to open,
so you'll need to add a space and then:
"C:\Documents and Settings\DilworthBill\My Documents\CoolStuff.ppt"

So the whole link (watch for NG text wrap) looks like everything between the
stars on one line:
**C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\POWERPNT.EXE "C:\Documents and
Settings\DilworthBill\My Documents\CoolStuff.ppt"**

The link is long, but it will, from an active presentation, open a
different presentation in edit mode (while placing the active slide show on
hold in the background). Does this sound like what you are trying to do?

Something is not working right, here is the path to one of my files as you
outlined
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\POWERPNT.EXE
"\CALNTSHARE1\SHARE\Gis\EastCoastDevelopmentProject\Regional\Wells\uwids\350B164650048450_AWIG1\350B164650048450_AWIG1_Final_report_BNA.ppt"

when I click on the hyperlink I get the typical "the page cannot be
displayed" screen
If I highlight the path in the address bar on the browser and hit enter, I
then get 'windows cannot open this file .... what do you want to do... select
program from list? " and I pick powerpoint.exe from list then say ok
I then get a powerpoint message
Powerpoint cannot open the type of file represented by
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\POWERPNT.EXE

So it seems that it is not recognizing the exe and then passing the file
along.
note that the file reference is on our network - but the address is correct
(went to file in windows explorer and sent path to clipboard to paste into
hyperlink command)

Are you using "Run Program" under Action Settings, or are you using "Hyperlink
to"? That could be the problem. PowerPoint isn't always friendly with network
addressing, but it sounds like it is choking on the reference to PowerPoint and
isn't even getting to the reference to the presentation file on the network.

I am using a theme, and hyperlinking a piece of text to the ppt file
I can't find your reference to action settings in any of the dropdowns in
fp2002

thanks

On a networked drive, you may run into problems. Any chance of mapping to
the drive? This at least would give you a solid path to the file (E.G.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\POWERPNT.EXE
"Q:\CALNTSHARE1\SHARE\Gis\EastCoastDevelopmentProject\Regional\Wells\uwids\350B164650048450_AWIG1\350B164650048450_AWIG1_Final_report_BNA.ppt")

It would optimal, if you were able to create a copy of the presentation on
the local hard drive.

BTW just to check,
Make sure of the path to your version of the PowerPoint program (versions
create different paths)
Make sure there is a single space and no return in between the parts of the
hyperlink
Make sure that path to the presentation is complete (usually network paths
have a double \\ in the beginning)

Sorry. I haven't had enough coffee. I was incorrectly referring to linking in
PowerPoint, but of course you are linking in FrontPage.

Taking the task in pieces, can you link that text to C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office 2003\OFFICE11\POWERPNT.EXE and make that work? It works here for me in
Front Page, but you need to substitute your own path. If it works then you can
focus on the correct format for specifying the path to your presentation file.

Ignore those other folks. Or ignore me if *I'm* the one who's off in left
field. But as I read it, you have links to PPT files in your HTML/web pages and
the answers you've gotten so far assume links from one PPT file to another.

You may want to have a look here:

You are correct, I am linking from a web page to the ppt files
I see that I need to edit my registry..
I assume then that everyone in my work group that uses this web will need to
alter their registry also if they want ppt to open in edit mode?

Thanks

Afraid so.

You might consider making the changes to your own PC, exporting a REG file of just
the changed key and distribute that for them to doubleclick. Beats turning the bulls
loose inside the chinash.... er, users loose on the registry. ;-)
