STOP ERROR

P

Patricia

Everytime I log on to my computer it works for a few
seconds and then it shuts down and a memory dump screen
comes up, with a stop error. It happens too fast for me
to read just what it is. But, it says to run in safe
mode. When I try that nothing works and says there is no
access to the internet. I have called microsoft and
waited on hold for over an hour with no answer.
Does anyone know what I can do about this?

If XP came preloaded on your system, then you should contact your system
manufacturer, not Microsoft.

That said, try the following:

First, run a virus scan on your system and make sure your antivirus software
has the latest definitions before you run the scan.

If the virus scan is negative, open Control Panel, open System, go to the
Advanced tab, click settings under Startup and Recovery and remove the check
from "Automatically restart" under System Failure. This will cause the
system to blue screen instead of reboot and will likely let you read the
full message which might give a clue as to the source of the error.

Open Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, look for
errors that correspond to when the problem happens, double click the error,
the information within may give a clue as to the source of the problem.

Assuming you have an actual XP CD and not a recovery CD, place the XP CD in
the drive, at the setup screen, select "Check System Compatibility." This
may give an indication of problem hardware or software that might be the
source of the issue.
