occasionally my xp pro laptop is having a dump of physical memory with the
error:

stop: 0x0000008e (oxc0000005, ox80543c1d, oxaa3d27bc, 0x00000000)

is this a ram error, or something else?

Hi Gary,

Have you been getting these stop errors ever since you first acquired the
laptop, or did they begin some time thereafter, and if the latter, can you
relate when they began with any changes made to the computer's hardware or
software?
Do you get the stop error message when you start your computer, or when you
shut down, or at other times?
If you get the message at start-up, are you able to boot up at all? If no,
have you tried booting into safe mode (when you reboot, you repeatedly press
the F8 key which should raise a start-up selection screen, from which you
select boot into safe mode.)
You said: "occasionally my xp pro laptop is having a dump of physical memory
with the error:..." What other messages do you get, and when?
Open your Event Viewer from Administrative tools on the Start menu, and see
if any errors are logged under the system heading and the application
heading at about the time you get the on-screen stop errors. If so, get all
available information from the error's Propeties (right-click on the error
and then on Properties), including its description, category, source and
event ID, and post them here.

Regards,

On a second thought, let's try something concerning your paging file:
- Close all open programs and disconnect from the internet.
- Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance, click Settings.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then.under Virtual Memory, click Change.
- Make a written note of whether the virtual memory is set for custom size
(and
if so, the initial and maximum sizes), or system managed size (probable
setting),
or no paging file (unlikely).
-- Click No paging file, and press the Set button. If you then get a
warning, click
Yes.
- Click OK successively until the dialog box closes.
- Restart your computer.
- Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance, click Settings.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then under Virtual Memory, click Change.
- Click System managed size.
- Click OK successively until the dialog box closes.
- Restart your computer, and see if any better.
