error code 0x0000008E,etc

J

jeb

Hi, Windows XP stopped for me with a blue screen giving
the error message:

STOP:0x0000008E (0xC00000005, 0x80535795, 0xEDB09604,
0x00000000)

physical memory dumped

What could have caused this error and how can it be
corrected?

Thanks
J-roc

Hi Jeb,

The primary suspect is damaged ram. If you want to check the memory, there
are free programs here:

http://www.simmtester.com/page/products/doc/download.asp
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

But keep in kind that a thorough test can only be done with test equipment
at a computer shop. Software tests are not perfect in diagnosing these
issues. At the price of memory today, you may find that the test costs more
than a replacement stick.

There are, however, several other possible causes:

"STOP 0x0000008e" Error Message During Windows XP Setup
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315335

A "STOP 0x0000008E" Error Message Occurs in Wdmaud.sys
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=325154

Random "0x0000008E" Error Message on a Blue Screen in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=827663

A "STOP: 0x0000008E" Error Message Occurs When You Change the Hardware
Acceleration Setting

I just experienced the same exact error code. My system is down and the Hard Drive (which is only a few months old) is not recognized by the system. The system took a physical memory dump prior to shutting itself down and now I can't get the system to restart.
I don't believe the hard drive has crashed because it attempts to seek information, and the write up for the 0x0000008E error code I located on the Windows site only refers to the following for the error code
SYMPTOM
When you run Microsoft Windows XP, you may randomly receive an error message on a blue screen that references a bugcheck ID 0x0000008E (KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) error.
I don't believe this is the same problem
Did you get your system up and running and if so what did you have to do?

To whom are you speaking? You should 1) always quote a little of the
previous post for clarity; 2) not add your new post to someone else's
thread - this is called "hijacking". That said, the fact that you say
your hard drive is not recognized by the system indicates some sort of
hardware issue. Without knowing more about your computer specs and what
exactly you mean (is the drive seen in the BIOS and not Windows, etc.),
I can't give you a specific answer. You may want to start by testing
the memory and the drive. Post back with details about your computer if
you want more help.

Sorry, this is the first time I have used the news group. I will
start a new message after i check the items out I won't do this again.

No big. To make life easier for you, here is information about how to
use newsgroups (this is *not* scolding you! I just think the knowledge
will make things nicer for you):

There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you can use Outlook
Express since you already have it. Here are some links to information
about newsgroups to broaden your posting pleasure!

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page3.html#12-09-02 - a brief
explanation of newsgroups
http://michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm
http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/news/howto
default.asp (enter url on one line in browser addressbar)
http://aumha.org/nntp.htm - list of MS newsgroups
microsoft.public.test.here - MS group to test if your newsreader is
working properly

Now that we've got that out of the way, post back with information about
your computer, the system specs, when the error started, if the drive
is visible in the BIOS, etc.

Cheers,

Malke
