Stop error and recovering data

I had a series of stop error messages that resulted in my
doing a parallel install of XP. Most files and programs
are intact after the install but some important files in a
folder under a previous user name are now "access
denied." Anyone know how to recover such files? I tried
transferring them using the XP transfer function but it
refused to do so, although it did list the files (proving
they're still there). Can you do this through a DOS
prompt function?

If you are an admin on the new install you should be able to take ownership
of the files and then move them.
