Stop Error 0x0000008E (0xC000005) WIN32K.SYS - Address BF803E1A

Hello,

Need some urgent help! The virus Antivirus 2009 was found on my PC
last week. I installed Spybot and Lavasoft's Ad-aware to check for
spyware. The PC crashed during the spybot scan. After rebooting the
PC I receive the blue screen Stop Error 0x0000008E (0xC000005)
WIN32K.SYS - Address BF803E1A just before Windows XP is about to
start. I have tried safe mode, last good config. I have also tried
Chkdsk /r and performing a repair using the Windows XP CD but nothing
has so far fixed the issue.

Last night I attempted to repair the registy using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
(How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP
from starting). This worked and I can now login to Windows but I have
lost all my user settings and various errors are displayed when XP
starts. I made a backup of the old registry before I completed the KB
article. Is there anyway I can repair the old registry files as I
really do not want to rebuild the machine.

Thanks,

Brett

Hi, no jpy. Trying to run another repair but it is looking like a
format and reinstall! Unless someone else knows how to resolve this
issue!

Hello Zam,

Question please: Do you have just the STOP error only? or does your system also have an infection from AntiVirus 2009?

The reason I ask is that you added your post to "brettmanning24" who really has a terrible mix of issues.

If all you have is the STOP 0x8E that makes your case different. And if so, you need to get help or research that.
See if you can restart your system, tap & retap F8 key on your keyboard to get Avanced bootup Options.
Then select Safe Mode.

Right away, do this and post back your findings:
See what Event Viewer has in it's log. Select Start button/ select Run , then type in

eventvwr.msc<enter>

-- or Go to Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools >Event Viewer.

Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings.

check in Event Viewer for any other error messages that occurred
at or nearly at the same time as this one. Right-click on My
Computer and select Manage. Click on the + to expand the Event Viewer
category to show the 3 or 4 subcategories. Browse through the System
and Application categories and check out any entries there with date
and time stamps that correspond to your error.

Brett,

You have tried quite a mix of different things, that bottom line, after all the things that were done, the best thing is to really wipe the system, and reload fresh.
That is the safest thing to do.

I say that for a number of reasons. The malware Antivirus 2009 comes in different mixtures and obviously this had remnants of it.
In addition, the system may well have been infected with worse.
