I click Shift/Alt/D to insert the current date in documents. Forever
after whenever I open a doc the date is automatically changed to the
current date. How can I make Word NOT update these date within the
documents?

Go to Insert > Date & Time > uncheck "Update Automatically" > OK.

"Update Automatically" was not checked, the box was empty. Word still
updates the date within documents automatically. Any other settings I
can tweak?

Hit alt-F9. The date will show the field code {DATE}. Change it to
{CREATEDATE} and it will show the date of creation and stay that way. Alt-F9
again to show field results instead of field codes.

Shift-alt-D is designed to insert an automatically updating DATE field and
shouldn't really be used to insert today's date in ordinary writing.

This sounds like what I want to happen, but when I hit alt-F9 nothing
happens, no matter how many times I hit it.

Hmm....Then try manually typing the CREATEDATE field. Hit control-F9 to
insert the braces, don't type them.

If Alt-F9 doesn't do anything, you don't have any fields.

Try typing the following:

CREATEDATE \@ "MMMM d, yyyy"

Then select what you just typed and press Ctrl-F9 to change it into a field.
Then press F9 to update the field. If you still see the field after you
press F9, press Alt-F9.

Yes, that worked. But I don't want to go through all that each time, I
may as well just type in the date.

I do seem to have a list of fields: under Insert/Fields/Date and Time
there are 6 listed in the righthand column under Field Names, with
CreatDate at the top.

Still, when I place the cursor in the doc where I want the date and
then hit alt-F9 nothing happens.

Alt-F9 doesn't insert the date, it only toggles between showing field codes
and field results. Look up Fields in Help for more info.

If you insert the date through Insert | Date and Time and make sure "update
automatically" is not checked, it will insert today's date and will not
change. Or, yes, just type the date.

You could record a macro to insert today's date and assign a keyboard
shortcut to it, if you felt like it.

I am unable to see most of the posts in this thread (servers playing up),
but here are two basic pieces of information that I suspect others have
provided:

1. Alt+Shift+D inserts a DATE field, which updates automatically. If you
don't want an updating field, you have two choices: insert date text by
typing (and accepting AutoComplete suggestions for help) or insert a
CREATEDATE field, which will never update.

2. If you choose the latter solution, you could save the CREATEDATE field as
an AutoText entry and assign the Alt+Shift+D shortcut to it.
