STOP 7B on upgrade install from Win2k

Just installed XP Pro on a workstation previously running Win2kPro. Install
went fine, although it did say something about a mass storage issue, that I
would have to reinstall those drivers. After the final reboot, I keep
getting a 7B stop error.

I know it has something to do with my "mass storage" device (USB card
reader). I unplugged it, get same error.

I am in the process of downloading the XP boot disks (for some reason, I
can't boot off the XP CD).

Am I on the right track - to do a "repair" install?
