I'm trying to recover from a BSOD 7B. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure I
caused the 7B myself while using AutoRuns. I have a Restore Point from just
before the 7B, and I also have a file backup from the day before. But I
can't boot the system to run System Restore. Trying to start normally or in
Safe Mode produces the 7B. Starting the Recovery Console (which I had
previously installed) produces an error message saying that the HAL is
damaged or corrupt. But it really isn't. I took the HDD out of the system
and replaced the HAL from a known good backup, and it made no difference.
Currently I'm using the HDD in an external SATA housing so that I can access
all the data on it. The HDD is OK (no errors from CHKDSK); it just won't
boot. How can I fix the problem? Ideally I'd like to find a way to do the
System Restore without being booted to the HDD. By changing the permissions
on the System Volume Information folder I can see the ~8GB restore data that
I need -- but how can I apply it without being booted to the HDD? Is there a
command-line parameter I can use to tell System Restore where to look for the
data and where to apply it?
Thanks, Geoff
