I am trying to install Windows XP on a IBM T42 notebook.
It originally had a windows 2000 image. Then I did the following;

- Ran an eraser utility (killdisk) to wipe the contents of the
harddrive.
- Used an NT boot disk on a USB floppy drive to run Fdisk.
- Created a partition.
- Formatted the harddrive.
- I can't seem to boot windows XP from the CD (I tried setting the
boot sequence to the cd drive but to no avail)
-Next I downloaded from microsoft the windows xp boot disks (Floppy).
- I ran into an error on the last of the disks with the following **
STOP 0x7b (param 1, param 2, param 3)
-After doing some searching I updated the bios.
- I also read to update the embedded controller, however after running
this the system said it did not need to be updated.
- I keep getting the same error.

I also tried running a boot disk that loaded the smrtdrv, I was able
to gain access to the CD drive (set to R) and run r:\i386\winnt.exe

It copies files to harddrive and it looked like it was doing its thing
but it did not reboot automatically at the end and itt just hung.

I think I tried everything I could think of.

I do not know what else to do, please help.

The customary way of installing Windows XP is to boot directly from
the Windows XP cdrom. From setup, a clean hard drive is normally
partitioned and formatted for Windows XP. This error occurs since
the partitioning and initial formatting to Windows NT speces is not
acceptable to Windows XP. Hence, the 0x0000007B stop error. IIRC,
NTFS in Windows XP is different from that in the earlier versions of
Windows NT and 2000.
