When I turn on the system I get Unmountable_Boot_Volume
and STOP 0X000000ED error followed by 0XC00000032,
0X00000000 and various other errors. I cannot get any
further to do any type of repair. System does not respond
at all. Can someone please help? I tried inserting the
XP re-install cd rom, but still not getting anywhere.
Problem occurred after a power surge. Running a Dell
Dimension 4400. Thank you!

Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without there overlay
software which is not needed anyway.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply! I did open the
computer and, to be honest, I wasn't certain what I was
looking for! I am more of an applications programmer than
hardware wizard. I hope I don't sound too ignorant if I
ask what you mean by reseating the hard drive?
Thank you again.

Reseat means to disconnect then reconnect the cable.
This helps give a proper connection.
Be sure power is off and power plug pulled.
There will most likely be 3 flat ribbon cables about 3" wide each.
One goes to floppy, another to CD drive and 3rd to the hard drive.
The 3rd cable is what you need to reseat at both ends.
It will not hurt to also do the others.
Be careful not to misalign or damage to pins may result.
You may want to get a friend to help.

Problem solved!! I reseated the hard drive and was able
to access the bios to boot from my recovery CD. Made it
to the recovery console and ran chkdsk /r. Sure enough,
files repaired and system restored. No data lost at all.
Thank you VERY much for your help!!!!
