STOP: 0X0000007B Error

Hi all,

I have a problem with the following Stop error on XP Pro SP2:

STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7986528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

How the machine gets to be in this state is somewhat complex: its owner
attempted to add more RAM - without switching the machine off.
Unsurprisingly, the motherboard wasn't too happy about that and subsequently
refused to boot, or even POST.

Having tested the RAM in my machine, and found it to be working, I concluded
that the motherboard was dead or dying. Knowing that the machine contained
about 50Gb of data, some of which is vital, I ghosted the machine's 120Gb
HDD onto the largest drive available to me - 80Gb - as a precaution. The
ghost process went according to plan, and I then replaced the machine's
motherboard with a different brand and attempted to do a repair install of
XP before booting the machine as suggested by the relevant knowledge base
article. The install completed, but the machine would not boot - it got part
way through scrolling the blue bar across the XP boot screen, then hung,
although it would boot in safe mode.

I assumed that this would be some kind of driver conflict, but before I
could do more than speculate about this the machine's HDD made an awful
grinding sound and died. I have, therefore, fitted a new 200Gb drive and
ghosted the backup back onto it from the 80Gb drive. I have again run a
repair install, which completed successfully, and this time the machine
rebooted and displayed the desktop. Naturally, it wanted me to activate
Windows, which I did. However, upon reboot I am faced with the above error
message; there is no mention of "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" as is documented
in some other postings / KB articles.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated - the machine's owner would very
much like to avoid a complete reformat and reinstall if at all possible,
although the fact that his data, at least, is safe on my backup drive may be
some consolation if this is unavoidable!

TIA

Rob Ashburn.

Hi Will,

thanks for the link. I'd actually already seen the KB links from that page,
but it's appreciated anyway.

Since my last post, I have managed boot that machine into safe mode (should
have thought of that before!). In device manager I found an unknown device,
which I disabled, and then rebooted the machine in normal mode.

The machine booted successfully, and I enabled the previously disabled
device and installed all the drivers that came with the new motherboard
(VGA, sound, LAN). I THINK the unknown device was part of the onboard sound.

Anyhow, at each subsequent reboot the machine has (so far) successfully
booted into normal mode. I'm fascinated to know the cause of this problem,
but for the moment I will consider it resolved - unless you think otherwise?

I will post back if the problem reoccurs.

Thanks again,

Rob.
