I increased my ram from 256mb to 768mb and installed digital image 9. The
page file went from 335mb to 1103mb. When I tried to reduce it to 500mb, I
got a blue screen with the stop 0x00000024 and classpnp.sys error. This
continues to occur after running scf /f /r and with AVG turned off. I have
run the pitstop test and the ram checks good. My google search turned up
several Microsoft articles that I did not understand except for the
suggestion run the scf test and call ms support. I have not called yet.
The article in Kelley's Korner said that the ram could be bad and remove it
to see. I have not done that. Also, it said that the page file could be
corrupted and to delete it. I tried but could not delete it.

My computer seems to run fine and I could leave well enough alone but it
bothers me to have an error that I do not understand.

Any suggestions?

The initial size of the pagefile should be equal to your
physical RAM X 1.5. If you have 128MB, your pagefile's
initial size should be 192MB. The maximum size should be
at least twice that. It is best to let Windows manage the
size of the page file; tampering with this can cause
problems like the one you are having.

I should have been more clear. If you have 768MB of RAM, you should
have a minimum pagefile size of 1152MB . The mazimum size should be
2300MB to 3000MB. It probably won't ever actually reach the maximum,
but you should allow it anyway for best performance.

Barry, Thank you for your answer; however, I do not think that it addressed
my question and it does not agree with postings by several MVPs. Look at
Alex Nichol's write-up at www.aumha.org I am running Bill James winxp page
file usage. After I added the memory, I ran DI9 and edited a photo. At the
same time, I listened to music with WMP9. Also, IE6 was active. The max
page file usage was 35MB. That is 30 time less than the page file setting.
I think that 500MB to 600MB is OK. I followed the information about setting
the page file that is at the MVPs site and got this error. None of the
google searches or the info at Kelley's Korner say that I should not try to
change the page file setting and I will get this error if I do.

I still would like information about this error.

The problem was the new RAM module just like your site said. It just took
me a little time to find DocMemory to verify it.
