How the data can survive and be usable after formatting.
The software I saw stated it was difficult to bypass but said nothing
about surviving a format.

Sorry, Can't cite a source. It was a story on a Tech Show I saw a few
years ago. My guess is that at least part of it is written to the MBR
or a hidden partition that the software creates. As there is no
indictcation that the software exsists on the machine, It is doubtful
that a thief would do an FDISK.MBR or look for hidden partitons.

Remember, virus's that survive reformatting used to be common.

David;
Here is one, but there is nothing that even remotely suggests it will
survive a format.
As I stated before, just because it may be difficult to remove says
nothing about surviving a format.

Ok, That merely shows that the software you saw and the software in
the article I saw aren't the same.

Like I said. It's been awhile seen I've seen the article. But, I
clearly rememeber it saying that the software will survive a re-format
as it surprised the hell out of me.

I love Barry's answer... I couldn't stop laughing for weel 5 min..

It have been so far the more realistic answer I've ever hear

There is a program from a company that once in your PC doesn't shows up at all in any menu, but it did call your home phone line regularly accordingly with the settings you did put on it, say, every 2, 3, 4... hours unless it was already connected to your home line. I don't know about USA, but in UK we can trace back the caller because he/she was unaware of the call made by the PC so he/she can't dial the "hold the number" prefix on time

Unfortunately, and because the software only did work with Windows 95 and 98 and they said that they were not yet thinking in developping further the software (It was a free software...) so I did throw away all the details and now I can't remember tha name and address

I can tell you that it did work absolutelly perfect

Since I read this post I've been trying to trace the company on the net without success. Perhaps someone else have more luck... But truth is that someone out there knows how to do it..

Otherwise, about to reporting to the Police, I subscribe Barry's statment: Yeh! Right...
