stolen laptop

My lap top was recently stolen. If it is used to gain
access to the Internet can I find out who stole it?
 
I thought my computer could be tracked using the software
registration or the IP protocol #

In theory yes ... especially true if you watch a lot of movies .... in
practise few (ie none probably) Government departments are going to
mount a worldwide search for your laptop.
 
It is highly unlikely that whoever stole it uses the same IP address you
did.
