Still the same problem!

As I've used up the THREE incident reports that I can
submit for a product that I paid $600.00 for, I'm forced
to reused past incident reports to get a fix to the
problem of the desktop incon reverting to their default
setting startup/reboot. The newsgroups are TOTALLY
useless to me as they are populated by NON-TECHNICAL
SUPPORT INDIVIDUALS! (No insult intended to those
individuals who read this...meaning EVERYBODY!!!) So I
will be reusing one of the reports until a fix is found
or I switch to a NON-MICROSOFT OPERATING SYSTEM!!!

BTW, in an attempt to fix this problem, I went to the
extreme of wipe the ENTIRE hard drive AGAIN!!! An I still
have the same problem!

What happens is this. I reinstalled and set the desktop
for my favorite desktop theme, but every time I boot up
the system, the desktop icons revert to their default
icons. I've tried many different solution, to no avail.
Can any TRUE TECH SUPPORT PERSON give me some help
(mental help I already have)? Now I'm not faulting the
people that helped me in the past, but I feel that this
problem use NEVER be solved.

What's the prob? Does the theme revert back to windows classic or windows xp
theme. Or does just your icons change and the theme stays?

1) This is a PEER support group NOT an official means of getting product
support. Most of us here that DO help are VERY technical, in fact probably
more so than the 1st (and probably 2nd) tier tech support at MS. Slagging
us off doesn't help your cause any mate...

2) You paid $600 for XP? You need more help than you think... The salesman
who sold it to you REALLY saw you coming!

3) I thought MS only gave you 2 free incidents, and you certainly shouldn't
be able to reuse one for a different problem, that'd be a fourth incident
which you'd have to pay for...

4) By all means go to Linux or something... You'll find you get NO free
support incidents if you don't want to use online resources, unless you pay
for one of the expensive distributions

5) A desktop theme and a visual style are NOT the same. If you are using
the new XP style interface then this is a visual style not a theme. To use
themes, you must first set XP to Classic view in display properties... Are
you by any chance using a theme from an earlier version of Windows? AFAIK,
these are not fully compatible...

A search of the newsgroup found this suggestion which looks like it might
help you create your own work around.... However it involves editing the
registry which can be risky so I guess it depends how crititical it is for
you to have the right theme on your desktop.

Theme stays but the Icons revert to their Windows XP
defaults every time they're changed and the system boots.
I believe it may be a corrupted shell32.dll file. Any
ideas on how to extract/get a new shell32.dll file?

Now I understand. What themes are you using? Are they from MS Plus for XP?
Do you also have style xp installed?

Answers:

1) I did apologize beforehand.
2) Canadian money, with BOTH taxes and mark-up.
3) After three incidents, I received a warning saying
that the product key I provided had used up all its
incident reports.
4) I find that WINDOWS 98 SE is more stable then XP. And
if I had to, I would switch to Linux.
5) The theme I'm using consist of jpg and bmp files, plus
animated cursors and wav files. No installation from a
single file and no viruses/spyware.
6) A possible cause of my problem, other then my mental
state, could be a corrupted shell32.dll file.

I'll give your first solution a try. It could also be a
corrupted shell32.dll file.

Neither. I have a Starcraft Desktop Theme made up of jpg,
bmp, animated cursors and wav files. I compiled them
using the Windows XP Desktop Control Panel. Then I saved
it under the Starcraft Theme name.

That could be your problem. I don't think you can do it that way. I believe
there is a theme creation tool for starcraft(style xp has one). I don't
think you can just save theme schemes and then rename them to work with
starcraft desktop. You have to create them in the tool designed to be used
with starcraft.

All that whining for a problem that he created himself
and then wants to complain that he can't get any support.
If you can't fix a problem like this yourself I doubt you
will even be able to get Linix started.

If that's so, then can you explain why I have the same
problem when I switch to an XP theme and reboot? I've
already tried it on several, with the same results.

Oh if xp themes do it too then yes something is not right. Try this: start,
run, type in: sfc /scannow, hit enter. have your xp disk handy. This will
replace any corrupted files.
