Still the SAME Active-X problem!!!! Can't get updates........

# I'm sorry to say that even though I was able to remove the Virtumonde
(Trojan ?) tonight plus running all my anti-spyware programs in safe mode -
I still cannot get the updates from the MS website. I just keep getting
this error:

In another post you say you are running a firewall - do you have the
Microsoft sites set as permitted?

The error you show is one we see when a firewall blocks an Active-X
control, this can happen with soft or appliance type firewalls, but is
not something we see with most NAT Routers.

I'm not suggesting that you disable your firewall, but you really need
to look at the settings and fix them.

You also need to be a member of the Administrators group to run the MS
Updates.

# No amount to searching around the MS site helped. :*( The Security bar
don't come up now but I still can't get them. I have Updates set to
Automatic so perhaps one day I'll get them that way - maybe they are
downloading and I don't know it. I don't know where to look for them.

OH!!! And MSAS asked to use the Internet (ZoneAlarm) and updated itself.
:)) I'm making progress here.

After removing the Virtumondi infestation MSAS updated itself almost
immediately, but I still can't get updates from the MS website. Right now
we're using MozillaFireFox on all the PCs, so that may help keep the
crapware off of them (can we be so lucky?).

You are making good progress. As others have suggested it now sounds like a
registry key permissions problem and/or a firewall setting. Try setting
Zonealarm to it's lowest setting when getting the updates. You could even
try uninstalling it and using the Windows firewall while troubleshooting.

If you do

## Yes, I have freeware that I checked with Norton and Ewido - none showed
spyware. I only download what I need and from sites recommended on

I'm glad you got it working and that you posted back your resolving

got it fixed - I'm sure we'll all benefit from knowing how you resolved
it.

Hello FreeSpirit
I went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago. No matter what I tried,
I wasn't able to download Active X.
The weird thing about it was I had no problems getting the updates before
and then all of a sudden I wasn't able to.
I tried some suggestions from people on this forum but, nothing worked.
I ended up reformatting my computer in order for things to work properly.

They suggested I do that as well but another person here had me try
reregistering some dlls and THAT worked! After I rebooted all the browser
problems were gone. (I just need to know how to stop the Flashcard drive
from *defaulting* to Music and my PC will be 100% again. I'm sure this is
why by MS camera and scanner Wizard won work anymore. I'll keep mentioning
it here until someone who knows about this problem sees my post and helps.)

As for your Active-X problem.....
Press Start, select Run
Now type in: regsvr32 Softpub.dll, and then click OK two times

regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll

Reboot and try Windows Update again. I hope this works for others who try
it.
