Still the SAME Active-X problem!!!! Can't get updates........

F

~ FreeSpirit ~

I still can't get MS critical updates. This is what I get when I try.
However there is no choice on right clicking the information bar to INSTALL
this Active-X Control. There's a yellow shield on the left hand side of the
bar and right clicking gives me a small window that says "Information Bar
Help." How and WHERE do I get this special Active-X Control so I can get
my updates since the Bar does not work witn my version of SP2?
------
Install the ActiveX control required to view the website

The website will not display correctly on your computer without this
control. To install it:
1. Right-click the Internet Explorer Information Bar. It's located just
below the address bar.
2. In the right-click menu, click Install ActiveX Control.
3. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Install.

Note: If the Information Bar doesn't appear, or if you've installed the
control but still can't use the website, take these steps to solve the
problem.

Example: Internet Explorer Information Bar with right-click menu

NOTE: I have no choice on my Right click Menu.

That doesn't work either, but thanks for the suggestion. This time the SP2
bar with the yellow shield on the left didn't come up, but I still got the
Active-X problem. Since installing SP2 I am unable to any more updates from
MS.

MS is in the trusted zone and has been. How can I get critical updates?
Must I uninstall and reinstall SP2 every time? That would be a real hassle.
Also MSAS claims I'm not connected to the Internet. I can't get updates for
that either. Should I get rid of SP2 like last time? It sure seems to
interfere with getting critical and other updates from the MS site.

You're getting to the Internet some how.

Can you get to GOOGLE.COM with that computer?

If so, open IE, click on Tools, Internet Options, Security Tab, Internet
Zone, click "Default Level", then "Local Intranet zone" and click
Default level, then the other two (Trusted/Restricted)....

Now, open the "Restricted Sites" zone, click SITES, remove any sites.

Open the "Trusted" sites area - I don't care what you see in there,
enter "*.microsoft.com" and click ADD - this puts all of the
Microsoft.com sites in the trusted zone, not just Microsoft.com.

Click APPLY

Now select the Privacy Tab - select "Medium", then click SITES, then
remove everything. - click APPLY

Click SETTINGS on Pop-Up Blocker, remove all sites. Click APPLY.

Now, select the "Advanced Tab" and then click "Restore Defaults" and
apply.

Now, close Internet Explorer.

Open IE and try it again.

Once Sp2 is installed are we NOT supposed to get any more critical updates
from the MS site? Once I installed SP2 the MS site can't check my system
for needed updates, and shows an Active-X problem. It doesn't say where I
can get this Active-X program as it's not on the SP2 security bar as the
site says it is.

Anyone else able to get updates after installing SP2? If so how are you
getting around the Active-X problem?

That's it. All the MVP's and others here forgot to tell you :)

I have seen computers that couldn't get the Windows Updates. There were
various causes none of which involved SP2 as a factor. By far the most
common cause was the clock set wrong, followed by malware or the user
changing settings so the updates couldn't be downloaded.

Your system was compromised by malware. You originally discovered this by
noticing the same problem. There is still some malware or some other
software on your system causing this to happen. Another possible cause is
the fact that you made so many changes trying to fix the problem that
something in the registry is wrong. You can test for this by creating a
different user with Administrator permissions and see if that user can get
the updates. At this point your only option may be to do a clean install and
start over. If I remember correctly you have a recovery procedure but no
Windows CD. If this is the case download SP2 now and burn it to CD. Also
burn to CD any software updates needed for SP2 from the computer
manufacturer's site. Backup your data. Disconnect from the Internet. Run the
recovery procedure making sure the drive is formatted during the procedure.
Install the software updates from the manufacturer. Install SP2 from the CD
you burned. Reconnect to the Internet and try the Windows Update site. If it
is working then you can restore your backed up data and reinstall your
programs. Make sure to test the Windows Update site after each step so you
can find out if a program is causing the problem.

The SP2 warning bar doesn't give me that choice. See below:

Example: Internet Explorer Information Bar with right-click menu

## The new Security Bar give me NO CHOICES when I right click on it.
Now, open the "Restricted Sites" zone, click SITES, remove any sites.

time. How are they removed when there are thousands?
Open the "Trusted" sites area - I don't care what you see in there,
enter "*.microsoft.com" and click ADD - this puts all of the

which I added some time ago. The SP2 security bar still prevents the
downloading of the needed Active-X. How do I get rid of the Security bar
since it is obviously the problem here?

I can get the downloads I need.
Now select the Privacy Tab - select "Medium", then click SITES, then
remove everything. - click APPLY

## That's not possible since there are THOUSANDS listed there. How are they
removed other than one at a time? It would take hours to remove all these
one by one.......
Click SETTINGS on Pop-Up Blocker, remove all sites. Click APPLY.

## What popup blocker?
Now, select the "Advanced Tab" and then click "Restore Defaults" and
apply.

## Fine, but the SP2 security bar still prevents me from downloading
anything from the MS site including the Active-X I need. Tell me how to
disable the Sp2 security bar so I can get my critical downloads.
Now, close Internet Explorer.
Open IE and try it again.

## Problem one I cannot remove the many thousands of URLS you suggested by
hand. I did everything else and the SP2 security bar still prevents the
download of critical patches - PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO GET RID OF THIS
SECURITY BAR so I can get my downloads! I had no problems before installing
Sp2.

At this point your only option may be to do a clean install and

Yes, it will take non-HTTPS sites, you just have to UNCHECK the box that
is on that page that limits it to HTTP/Secure sites.

Uncheck it, add *.microsoft.com and it will work.

Just because the symptom occurs when SP2 is installed doesn't mean SP2 is
the cause. SP2 changes many security settings in Windows. Something SP2 does
is incompatible with something on your computer. It is most likely some kind
of malware. If SP2 caused Windows Update to fail don't you think that
Microsoft would fix it? Wouldn't there be thousands of posts on these
newsgroups complaining? In the last couple of months yours are the only
posts having this issue. There is something wrong with your system. You have
made so many changes while trying to troubleshoot this issue you may never
figure out how to get all the settings back to normal. That is why I suggest
a clean install with SP2 before anything else. It will get you to a known
working state.

Do you have a router or firewall? How do you connect to the Internet?

## I have ZoneAlarm and a dialup connection - Satellite download = 2 ISPs.

Not
having a password and being directly connected to the Internet can be a
vector for infection. If your computer is the gateway for Internet
Connection Sharing it is easy to get the firewall misconfigured.

## It's set to allow the other 2 PCs to access the net. Everything must ask
for permission the first time. As for incoming stuff... a check at the
Shieldsup (?) site said I'm in stealth mode. I don't think a hacker would
see me.

If you do
not have passwords on your accounts and the firewall is misconfigured you
are a sitting duck for hackers. It's one possibility. Another is freeware
programs. I just worked on a computer today that had a massive spyware

## Yes, I have freeware that I checked with Norton and Ewido - none showed
spyware. I only download what I need and from sites recommended on
alt.comp.freeware. Only Weatherbug was Adware,... HP treated me to that one
for free. ;-) I uninstalled it.

............ That is why
I do it for a living. I know exactly what's involved :)

## If I had to do it for a living I think I'd die of high blood
pressure......
After removing the Virtumondi infestation MSAS updated itself almost
immediately, but I still can't get updates from the MS website. Right now
we're using MozillaFireFox on all the PCs, so that may help keep the
crapware off of them (can we be so lucky?).
