Still having problems upgrading to 3.5

I had some problems with driver installation earlier that I resolved but now
the most recent driver I can install are the 3.2. When I uninstall the 3.2
drivers like the directions say and start to install 3.5 I get the message
"Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display
adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup." When I uninstall
my drivers I don't get an option to install the Windows Device Manager
drivers and the only thing on the drivers list is the Radeon drivers so I
can't install the Standard Drivers. I tried installing directly over the
3.2 drivers but got the same message. Any ideas? BTW the OS is XP Home. I
like this card more but Nvidia's drivers are so much more user friendly,
just my opinion please don't flame me.
Thanks
Gary

Yes this happened to me a long time ago. There is an ATI???.DLL that cannot
be deleted unless in Safe Mode. It just comes back. Since I fixed this it
has never come back. I posted this a long time ago:

It took many hours but I finally got the new 3286 WinXP 8500 drivers
installed. I kept getting error message "Install VGA Drivers First" and
sometimes a file could not be copied. I did something like this:

1. Start XP in Safe Mode by holding F8 key at boot start.
2. Disable "Radeon 8500" driver in Device Manager. Do not re-start.
3. From Add/Remove programs, uninstall ATI Video Drivers. Do not
re-start.
4. Open C:\Windows\System32 and delete ATI*.*. There is a Ati???.dll
that
is causing problem as cannot be deleted normally.
5. Try "Setup" for 3286 drivers but will still fail.
6. At Device Manager, select Radeon 8500 and select "Update Driver".
7. Select "Install from list or specific location".
8. Select "Don't search, I will select driver to install"
9. Pick Radeon 8500/Radeon 8500LE (Not Radeon 8500).
10. Celebrate!!

Let me know if this works for you.

Thanks Patrick but I don't know what they did with the 3.4 and 3.5 drivers
that they didn't do to the 3.2 driver but I don't have any problem with the
3.2s. Well I guess I'll try again when 3.6 is released or do a fresh intall
of XP which I don't plan to do anytime soon.
Thanks Again
Gary
