Still Fighting Permissions

D

Dick

I have read everything I can find on the Microsoft Support pages
trying to find out why, when I set subweb permissions, they apply to
the root web, but not the subweb. In the permissions users window, I
have an administration name, as well as the new user name for the
subweb. If I then check "Only registered users have access", the
permissions attach to the root web.

What would happen if I delete the administration name? Would I lose
access to the subweb?

the Domain that you want in the Obtain list from list. I don't have
that choice in my Add Users dialog box. Just name and password.

Have you spoke with your web host?

Only to verify that they allow subwebs and unique permissions. This
is what their FAQ states about passwords. It discusses password
protection at the host.

"Password Protect Web Pages

This option is not available for Web sites that use Microsoft®
FrontPage® server extensions, because FrontPage itself must manage all
the users and passwords for FrontPage sites.

To create password-protected areas, you can use FrontPage to create a
subweb with anonymous browsing disabled, then create users and
passwords within FrontPage. See your FrontPage manual for more
details."

Ok, but if it is not working, it is a hosting issue. Since it is their servers and FP must interact
with the extensions on their servers, the host must fix.

I told the host what you said, but they found that the problem was
back in FrontPage. When I created the subweb, I copied some images
from the root home page to the subweb home page. When I did that,
FrontPage reset the path of the images from the root image folder to
the subweb folder. Have no idea why it would do that. It was a
simple copy. Anyway, it tied the two webs together so that when I set
permissions, they always applied to both the root and the subweb.

Everything works fine now. I have to hand it to the tech at Tiger
Technologies for finding that problem. I never would have found that
or even suspected that could be the problem.

That would be normal when you copy image, you needed to copy the image folder in the root web to the
images folders in the subweb, then insert on your page, it wanted the path to be to the image in the
subweb. When you copy and image from a page to another page, FP will correct the link from the
current file location of the image to location of the page, the actually image is not moved.
