Still can't search from the address bar

Dark Knight

Hi,

I've been reading this newsgroup, and have tried the best I can to re-enable
search in my address bar in IE6. At first I thought the problem was that
QuickSearch was not working, but I've found that just typing search terms in
also no longer works. As far as I know, it was working just fine up to a
couple weeks ago, but now when I try to search using the address bar, I get
a "This page cannot be displayed" page, and the address bar changes to
http:///? search terms ("search terms" being whatever terms I search
on). While I'm typing the terms into the address bar, the tooltip says
"Search for 'search terms'", so some part of IE still knows what I'm trying
to do.

I've tried deleting my hosts file, installing and running Hijack This,
installing RepairDefaultPrefix.reg, and a few other things, I think. And I
still can't search from the address bar.

The only thing I can think of that I changed about 2 weeks ago was that I
installed a Microsoft security patch. It was the "Buffer Overrun in Windows
Help and Support Center Could Lead to System Compromise (825119)" patch. The
info page is at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-044.asp.

Could this have caused the problem? Does anyone know? If not, are there any
other suggestions for getting my address bar search back?

Thanks,

Jerri

Can you ping the sites.
From a DOS prompt execute
PING www.microsoft.com
Do your get a positive feedback?

Can you past the url in the address bar and see if you can get to the sites.

Make sure you add http://www.... in front of the address when you type them.

If these instructions work then you have some parasites in your computer.
Get help from this forum.

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware] or download direct (below):
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip

If you get a 404 error or Access denied, try:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/hijackthis.zip

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates "hijackthis.log")

Next, HijackThis | Config [button] | Misc Tools [button]
Click: Generate StartupList log [button] (generates "startuplist.txt")

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I don't actually have any trouble using IE to visit websites. And I have no
trouble searching if I go to, say, Altavista, or Google, or any other search
engine. It's simply that I can't perform a search from my address bar. I'm
very used to typing "av +search terms'" into the address bar and having the
Altavista search results window appear in my browser. That no longer works,
which is why I initially thought it might be a problem with Quicksearch. But
I now see that just typing a search term into the address bar also does not
work. When I do either, I get a "This page cannot be displayed" page, and
the address bar changes to http:///? search terms ("search terms" being
whatever terms I search on).

I've resorted to using the Search button in the IE button bar, which opens
that search pane on the left-hand side, but it seems awkward, and I'd rather
just be able to type my search terms into the address bar as I have done
previously.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Jerri

My 2 cents suggestion:

Open the "Search Pane" using the "Search" button in the IE button bar.

1 Click "Customize" at the top of the search pane.
2 At the "customize search settings" window click "autosearch settings"
at the bottom.
3 At the "customize autosearch settings" window select your preferred
from the pulldown menu in the upper box.
4 Select "Just display results at the main window" in the lower box.
5 click OK, OK. close and restart IE.

Hoping it helps, good luck!!

Thanks for your message.

I gave your suggestion a try, but still can't search ("Just display results
at the main window" was the setting I already had). I'm pretty much at a
loss.

Has anyone heard anything about the MS security patch I mentioned installing
in my first message. That's the only thing I can think of that changed on my
computer in the last couple weeks.

Thanks,

Jerri

What is your internet connection? Is it broadband?

If you use broadband goto the tab "Connection" in "Internet Options".
Then click "LAN Settings" to see whether the box for "Automatically
Detect Settings" is checked or not, if not check it and try again.

Good luck!

Hi Dark Knight - First, download and run this from Kelly's web site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/RestoreSearch2.REG If that
doesn't fix it, then post back and I'll post some additional steps.

Hi - Well, these are certainly not normal in that key for Win2k - I don't
know/remember what OS you're on. I would Export that entire branch (for
backup - we ALWAYS backup, right?) then delete them. If you develop
difficulty after removing them, you can restore and see if that fixes it. I
doubt that you will. As to the function, this is to restore the ability of
IE to automatically supply these prefixes when needed to construct a
well-formed URL, as for example, when you do a Cntl-Enter with just a name
in the Address window.
