Lost ability to search from address bar

D

Don Cohen

This is on my laptop - XP Home, IE6; no SP2 yet.

Had some recent spyware/adware problems, with hijacking of browser, etc.
Ran AdAware 1.05 and Spybot 1.3, with updated files, and removed a bunch of
trash. Everything back to normal except I can no longer search from the
address bar. I used to be able to just type in 'find' (no quotes) followed
by the words I wanted to search with, and Google would open up in the main
browser window.

Now, when I type 'find' and anything else, I get a 'Page cannot be
displayed' screen, with this showing in the address bar:

http:///? find search engine

(in this example, I used the words 'search engine' as the keywords).

I found and explicitly followed the instructions to edit the registry here:

http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=87

This didn't work. I can now make Google come up in the left pane when doing
a search, but typing in from the address bar still doesn't work.

I read and followed the instructions here (including installing the .reg
file in the second paragraph of that page):

http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2004/10/08/240062.aspx

Still no joy.

The registry (apparently) is configured correctly, but I still can't search
from the Address Bar.

When I go to the 'Customize' dialogue box via the search pane, and click on
"Autosearch" Google Sites is already selected. I tried selection a
different one, closing IE, re-opening, but the problem remains. I then
reselected Google Sites, but again no change in behavior, no matter what is
selected there.

A fix would be greatly appreciated!!

Disregard the above. I went ahead and created the URLSearchHooks key in the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER entry, and that did the trick! Address Bar searches now
bring up the Google page as desired.

So apparently either AdAware or SpyBot got a bit too aggressive, or
something along those lines.

In any case, the problem is solved, and I appreciate the help.
