So does the blue screen still occur if you boot into Safe Mode for
Windows?

Have you tried running System File Checker ("sfc.exe /scannow")? I
usually purge the %windir%\system32\dllcache folder (hidden in Explorer)
which holds a copy of the system files so SFC will reload that folder
with copies of the files from the install CD. If you have applied SP-2
but your install CD is SP-1 then you need to create a slipstreamed SP-2
install CD (see
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp) and
probably should also perform a Windows Update to make sure the system
files are up to date (but you might want to avoid the Windows Genuine
Advantage "updates" by deselecting them during a Windows Update
session).

So what does "nothing happens"? You hit F8 and the computer freezes
right after showing the POST screen?

You hear a Beep sound and then windows just starts up normal

There is no POST status screen *before* the OS loads? The beep tells
you that the POST completed and the BIOS will then go searching for an
operating system. You could try just repeatedly tapping the F8 key
during bootup (provided your BIOS doesn't use the same screen to view
the BIOS setup).

After all the useful advice that has been given you, I would suggest taking
they computer to a "Reliable" service shop and get it fixed. By reliable, I
would mean :
Not Circuit City, Not Best Buy, Not Radio Shack !

The POST (power-on self test), when completed, tells you information
such as the CPU type and speed, memory size, drives detected, devices
detected, etc. It is a black-white text screen that should coincide
when you hear the beep. See
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/bios/bootPOST-c.html.

If you power up cold, the monitor may not be ready to display or the
video is still blanked out. Once you see the OS is loading, shutdown to
do a warm reboot to see if you see the POST screen. Some bastardized
versions of Windows, like Dell's, make it damn hard to see the POST
screen. Could be F8 will not bring up a startup menu in your situation.
The manual that came with the computer with Windows preinstalled should
tell you how to enter Safe Mode.

Get into the BIOS setup to set the boot drive sequence to
floppy-CDROM-harddrive. Then reboot with an unformatted floppy in drive
A:. That should halt after the POST with an error that no loader was
found. Then you can see what the POST screen looks like. Otherwise,
you might have to call your friend to see how to view the POST screen
and what key is used to enter the BIOS setup.

You could also install the Recovery Console which will display an OS
select screen. After installing it, right-click on the My Computer
desktop icon, Properties, Advanced tab, Startup and Recovery, and check
the interval tha the select screen should remain onscreen.

"New & Used computer store HST #881355309"
So, that is "Reliable Service Shop"????????
I was thinking more along the lines of a Computer Repair
Technician".......There is a difference ..............
Sorry for the mis-understanding. (Between Shop and Technician)

Depends on which motherboard you have and its BIOS. Find out the brand
and model of your motherboard and download the manual from the
manufacturer's web site. Some common keys are Esc and Del but they can
use whatever they want.
