Steps to move from Business Contact Manager 2003 to 2007?

What are the steps for moving a small network of 6 people, from BCM 2003 to
the new version?

I don't want to lose anything!

Thanks...

Hi Randy
Upgrading to BCM 2007 would require you to install Office 2007 and BCM 2007
on all 6 client machines. If you were in a multi-user environment with one
client acting as the “host†or master database, this database will need to be
migrated to the 2007, and then shared. The migration of the BCM 2003
database happens during the first use of BCM 2007.

Hi Randy,

Having just done what you are attempting to do, here are the steps i
followed:

on server or database host:

1. Backup the database file (i'm paranoid so i saved a copy on the
network and another on DVD)
2. On the machine acting as the server (not an exchange server),
upgrade to Office 2007
3. Start outlook to make sure all is working well
3. close outlook and Install BCM 2007(this will also install SQL 2005
express)
4. Start outlook again and follow the BCM wizard (create a new
database, you will not end up using it but better let installation run
as it is supposed to)
5. Now Restore the BCM 2003 database. BCM 2007 will migrate the DB
into the correct format.
6. Review the data and make sure everything you want is still there.
7. Share the Database

On the Client machine:

1. Upgrade to Office 2007
2. Install BCM 2007
3. Connect to DB on the server

and that's about it actually.

Hope this helped

Regards,

Thanks Jerry, sounds like it should be an easy transition.

We have been receiving some "kernel32.dll" error messages lately. Is this
anything to be concerned about before we update?

We were planning on updating sometime this week.

Thanks for the steps...

Do you think I should be concerned about any database errors, that may be
causing this "kernel32.dll" error message, to start showing up? Do you think
the move to 2007 will correct any such problems?

Not sure about the cause of you error, so can't really help you out
there.

The above steps are reversable especially with a backup of the 2003
database. you'll have to decide if you have the time to go down this
road and then roll back if things don't work out.

The only thing i can tell you is that BCM 2007 has many more features
then 2003. The offline mode and form customisation were the 2 features
that interested us the most and drove us to upgrade.

Cheers,

Thanks for the steps...

I guess after reading some of the other problems people are having with their
initial upgrade to 2007...I'm probably more worried about another round of
problems with the software. I haven't had the best experience with BCM and
very little help.

Do you have the windows XP media? If so go to start > run and type the
following

sfc /scannow

This should initiate the system file checker and replace the missing DLL
file in case it was corrupted

Most people have had little trouble with the upgrade steps that yehia
articulated.

Besides the newsgroups, there is the BCM product team blog at
http://blogs.msdn.com/bcm, and support at
http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=1&gprid=11335.
You can also email the BCM team at (e-mail address removed).

All of these resources are available to you, should you run into trouble.
And as yehia points out, the steps are reversible.

Please let me know (by direct mail if you like) if there's a specific issue
you had in mind when you wrote, "I haven't had the best experience with BCM
and very little help."

Best regards,
Chris
