The default setting for System Restore in Windows XP is to create a
new restore point every 24 hours.

The following web page has a utility that will allow you to see what
your current actual setting is and to change it.

By default System Restore creates a automatic restore point every 24 hours. In case it doesn't, here are some troubleshooting steps at Bert's site.
