Status of internet connection

Have XP PRO and have lost the status monitor in the
taskbar for my isp connection have checked Network places
and isp is listed but will not give any advanced info on
connection speed or time on have checked for bugs -
nothing listed have antivirus and zone firewall running
but still no go have to disconnct from net by turning off
modem
