RE:the bar across the bottom of the screen - just in case
I am calling it incorrectly. START is in the left-hand
corner

Challenge: The bar is now double space taking up
valuable space. I want to make it go back to a single
line. Can you help?

Yep. Grab the top of the taskbar and then pull it down to the height you
want it to be. Then right click on an open part of the taskbar and click
"Lock the Taskbar". HTH.

Taskbar:

1. Make sure it is unlocked. Right-click and uncheck "lock the taskbar."
2. If you cannot reduce it by dragging down with the double arrow of your
cursor, then
3. Grab a white vertical bar in the task bar and drag it diagonally
downwards. Make sure the task bar has very few programs in it when you try
this.

If this does not work, let us know.
When finished, lock the taskbar.

Hi Wendy,

That is not the called the Status Bar. The status bar is what shows bottom
when IE or WE is opened immediately above the taskbar.

Right of the Start button is the Quick Launch bar, then the task bar then
the notification area. :o)

Suggestions:

This can happen by opening Accessibility Options, etc. If the icons on the
Quick Launch bar are showing as being larger, it will result in the taskbar
being twice its height and also include the date or similar under the clock.

If this is the case, right click the Desktop/Properties/Appearance/
Advanced. Under the Item drop box choose Caption Buttons and change the
number by one, ok your way out, then rest to 25.

And/or reset your default to the XP Theme.

Other options to consider if the above doesn't help, nor moving the glider
over toward the Start Button to list only three icons in the Quick Launch
bar:

Lock Size, Settings and Position of the Taskbar (Line 128)

Restore the Taskbar to Default Functionality (Line 164)
