msconfig lists "Services" and "Startup" which of these
are necessary, and which can be removed or deselected ?
there are 81 items in Services and 16 in services.
Task manager lists many "processes"-can any of these be
removed?

thanks

Mike,
Mostly all the programs in your MSCONFIG Startup items can be unchecked. Do
not disable any services unless you know exactly which ones yo don't need.
Read here to figure out which ones can be disabled
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm . Most of the services are
neccesary for your computer to run.

unfortunately only you can know what you want/need to have running, but many
of these can be shut off, write down(on paper) what you disable just in case
things go wrong.
