Startup Programs

I have Address 6.0. With Windows 98, the Event calendar
would automatically display on the desktop when the system
was turned on. How do I do the same thing with XP?

It didn't think that *all* programs worked exactly the same in XP as they did in Win 98. I know that I've had to update/patch a lot of programs so that they will work in XP.

Startup programs work the same way in XP as in Win98. First check the
program to see if it has a menu option that enables this at startup.

Alternatively, locate the executable for the calendar portion of the
program. Create a shortcut for it. Then drop that shortcut into your
startup folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your account>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Picky, picky picky. ;)

I didn't say the programs themselves would work the same. At least I
don't think I did. Some certainly do need updates to work in XP as you
point out.

I intended the meaning to be that programs run at startup in XP in the
same manner that they run in Win98. I debated using "all" or most" in my
statement when composing since there are highly specialized programs
that may need special handling to get them operative at startup. Since
chances are good that the special handling probably exists under other
operating systems as well I decided to leave "startup programs" in my
statement unadorned with qualifiers.

Thanks for the additional input, Will. You brought up a valid point for
the OP that needed to be mentioned.

Not 'picky' at all. Some of the updates/patches can cost a lot money - take Partition Manager for example - an update to an XP version costs about £37/$59 - multiply that by X to upgrade all programs that can be usable in XP and you have a large on-going cost.

I don't believe that most people realise that the cost of upgrading to XP from a previous version of Windows can work out so expensive - hardware & software related.
