Going through general PC "housekeping" via help & support centre. On
reviewing the above subject. In my computer info, I see lots of unknown
install dates Literally hundreds of non microsoft software references. can
anyone tell me what it all means. This is first time I have followed this
procedure.
Best Regards, TJM

Hi Timbo,

Can you be more specific? Hundreds of entries in the Startup folder
isn't normal by any means.

You can download a free utility, Autoruns, that will show you everything
being loaded when Windows starts. Don't make any changes unless you
know exactly what you are doing, as you could make Windows unbootable.

You may also be infected with malware/viruses. Download and install
Malwarebytes:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
update it and run a check, then also download and install Spybot-Search
and Destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html
update it and run a check.

You may have to download them and install and run them in Windows Safe
mode by rebooting your computer and when you see the BIOS screen, press
F8 repeatedly until you get a menu. Choose Safe Mode w/Networking.
Once loaded, install and update the programs and run a check.
Report back,

Hi Terry R
Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I followed your advice with the
Spybot & Malware, except for the safe mode bit, not too confident in that
area. They found lots of minors and a couple serious bugs but mostly tracking
cookies. I have added a specific sample of the stuff in question. Perhaps it
will reveal more.
I don't want to be a nuisance but maybe you can tell me why annoyingly
persistent emails, from Gaming and casino sites appear immune to blockers and
message rules. ATB Timbo

Usually because the site names/IP change so frequently. Did you install
Autoruns? That will give a better idea of what is loading where.

That many Gaming and Casino pop-ups are clear indication of a trojan or
spyware infection that is hiding in normal mode, so you need to scan in
"Safe Mode" with fully updated "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware"... and if
Malwarebytes doesn't find, try with "A Squared Free" also updated and in
safe mode, and later scan with your antivirus if still necessary. Read the
instructions for Safe Mode.

I am going to try the Safe mode bit now, if I am not successful I will ditch
the email address that is picking up all the rubbish. I just wish there was a
way of getting back at the companies and sites that use this method of
advertizing.

Thanks for the assistance, If I do get it right I will post a note.
