startup problem

when system starts up, user sign-in is okay, from sign-in
screen goes blank, no icons, no messages, just a curser
arrow on the normal background. Can someone direct me to
help?

hit ctrl+alt+del and click task manager
go to file and run and type explorer.exe
your desktop should appear.
