Startup Problem

Hi: Running WXP SP2 on a Dell Dimension Desk top. Shutdown last night
everything ok. Started up this morning and the system goes through the
normal boot, gets to loading personal settings and then clicks off and
reboots.

I've tried going to safe mode, go back to a previous configuration that
worked but it still gets to the same point and then reboots.

Any suggestions? I haven't added anything new to the system so there is no
new software or hardware.

Thanks

Have you been able to log into safe Mode successfully?.
Make sure the Power Button not pressed in and left like this making the
system Reboot every time you start, if it stuck it can cause this issue.
Check the power cord all fitted firmly in the back of the Computer/Case.

I checked the power cord and switch, both are ok. I disabled restart on
failure and got the following error message Sys terminated status OxC0000006
(Ox75e9edaa Ox0069F22C

When I boot in safe mode it still gets as far as loading personal setttings
and then kicks off. I tried safe mode with dot prompt. Same problem.

I tried using the Dell diagnostic disk but it still goes through the
rebooting to personal settings and kicks off.

Thanks

Hello Nass:
I put the win XP disk into the computer and got as far as repair mode.
However following the instructions I only had one option for operating
system. And the menu only showed one option which was press enter to
restart. That put me back into the same mode of restart during loading
personal settings.

I tried to use the Dell diagnostic disk but unlike the win XP disk there was
no option to access the disk.

I've tried several of the other options after pressing F8 at boot up but
none of them seem to work either.

I appreciate your help.

Hello nass:

The chkdsk worked. The system restarted with no problem. After all this
was done the computer wanted to send an error message to Microsoft. When it
was finished, Microsoft responded that the message was corrupted and there
might be a major problem with the computer.

Thanks for your help with this.

Hi Tony,
You are welcome, but what the Error message, it may be fixable if you send
us the exact message to have a go and see what we can do!.
Did you tried the Fixmbr command?.

Hello Nass:

I did not run fixmbr didn't think I needed it. I was so happy to get back
on line that I didn't run it. But I will run fixmbr today. I'll jot down
the error message from MS and send it later today.

Again, thanks for your help.

Hello Nass:

Well what a shocker! I started running Fixmbr or at least got as far as
just about to hit go when this message came up. It caused me to stop so I
have not run it.

"This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record.
Fixmbr may damage your partition tables if you proceed. This could cause
all the partitions on the current drive to become inaccessable. If you are
not having problems accessing your drive do not continue."

My hard drive is not partitioned but it was one of those issues where the
thing is now running and if I hit enter "all hell will break loose".

The MS error message is no longer popping up.

What do you make of the message for Fixmbr?

Thanks for your continued help.

Thanks for the links Nass. Glad to see the fixbbr is a normal "built in
error message". I did not run it since the computer seems to be running ok.

I did go to the Event Viewer and found the following:
5/21 4 error messages for Win Product Activation Error Code Ox80070013
under applications.
5/21 Error disk hard disk has a bad block under System
5/20 6 errors Side by Side Apple Software Plugin

I recall having some problems after the windows update, the thing never
seemed to install after rebooting.
I assumed this might have had something to do with the Apple ITunes update
so I uninstalled it.

The system seems to be ok now, and hopefully the bad block is not an
indication of a failing hard drive.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Tony,

Try to make sure the machine is clean from Viruses and malware by scanning
from an online vendor like liveonecare from MS and other reputable vendors.
Look on the task Manger if there is/are any suspicious running process with
odd name or even a system name and taking the CPU usage to high percentage>
