Startup Problems

While trying to remove a trojan virus from my lap top I was instructed to
make some registry changes. I must have screwed up because when I try
restarting windows (Windows XP Professional) only my desk top comes up with
the mouse cursor. I do not have any of the desk top icons or start button.
when I try starting in safe mode to do a system restore all I get is "Safe
Mode" displayed at each corner of a black screen and the mouse cursor.

Can someone help please. Thanks in advance

Have you tried a repair install using your XP CD?

on the blank desktop
press ctrl alt del to
open task manager.

then under process
kill explorer.exe

then un applications
initiate new task:

explorer.exe

if the above is fruitful
it means the registry
hive is too fragmented
and needs tuning up.

you should make a
restore point which
will make a back up
of your current registry.

then run "eusing" and then

remember, that you can
always restore the state
of the computer via a
restore point from safe
mode.

1. The number one priority when ANYTHING abnormal happens with your computer
is to ask yourself the question: Do I have backup copies of ALL my Valued
Data? If not, stop whatever else you are doing and get things copied. You
may need to remove the hard drive and hook it up to an "expert" friend's
computer as a slave drive to recover the data, before you format and
reinstall Windows, if worse comes to worse.

2. The words "trying to remove a trojan virus" give me no indication of
success in removing either a "trojan" or a "virus". Even if the actual
trojan or virus has been eliminated, you may not be able to repair the
damage done. (Got your Valued Data backed up yet?)

3. You should not be surprised if you mess with your registry and it gets
messed. I wish I could say that I've never messed up my registry, but at
least I'm gaining experience re-installing software. (Got Valued Data?)

4. Before you follow any advice from people in a public forum, get a 2nd
opinion.
